Yurru Ngartathati Men’s Group
An integral part of the success of the Mount Isa Murri Court, is the support of offenders before the Court. The Mount Isa Murri Men’s Group is being promoted through the Murri Court and other social justice organizations as a model for other such groups.
The prime purpose is to deal with issues around family violence and past events in their lives, which may contribute to offending.
The programme is expanded by the Group discussing drinking, violence, family pressures, relationships, anger management and life skills. Sharing is a vital component of the programme, as is an evaluation process around feelings and learning from the meetings. Older Indigenous men attend to mentor and offer support by offering stories, experiences and solutions from their own lives.
Yurru Ngartathati is from the local Kalkadoon language and means “Men Sitting Down.”
Run-on, the same basis as the Murri Men’s Group, the Murri Women’s Group, also meets weekly, every Tuesday.
Murrabi Ngarthati is from the local Kalkadoon language and means “Women Sitting Down.”

North West Queensland Indigenous Catholic Social Services acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we provide our services and their connections to Land, Water and Community. We pay our respect to their Elders, past, present and emerging. We also extend our respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people that live within the areas we operate. We recognise the contributions of all Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in working together to develop an enriched appreciation of cultural heritage we have here in Australia – A country which we all share and live in together.
